Demopolis Town Square has a deep-rooted history, dating back to the city's founding in 1817 by French expatriates of the Vine and Olive Colony. The park itself was established in 1819, making it one of Alabama's oldest public squares. It covers a full city block, bounded by Main, Capitol, Walnut, and Washington Streets. The square was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1975. Historically, the park was renamed "Confederate Park" in 1923 at the request of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. For many years, a Confederate statue stood at a prominent intersection near the square, a tribute to "Our Confederate Dead." However, after being damaged in 2016, the community decided to replace it with an obelisk dedicated to the memory of those who died in all wars, with the soldier statue moved to the Marengo County History and Archives Museum.
