The Downtown Aquarium in Houston opened its doors in 2003, transforming two significant city landmarks: Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks Building. The redevelopment project was undertaken by Landry's, Inc., whose proposal was accepted in 2000, envisioning a unique entertainment and dining complex. The Central Waterworks plant was ingeniously repurposed to house a shark and ray exhibition habitat, while the main restaurant was integrated into the second floor of the historic firehouse, preserving its original structure. The white tiger exhibit, though popular, faced controversy in 2015 from animal rights activists regarding the living conditions of the tigers. In response to these concerns and to ensure the well-being of the animals, the aquarium invested $4 million in a significant outdoor expansion of the tiger habitat, which opened in 2019, providing a more naturalistic and expansive environment for these magnificent creatures.
