Ladew Topiary Gardens is a living testament to the vision of Harvey S. Ladew, a wealthy socialite and avid fox hunter. Born in 1886, Ladew purchased the 250-acre Pleasant Valley Farm in 1929, transforming it into his country estate. Inspired by topiary gardens he encountered during his fox hunting trips in England, Ladew began creating his own sculpted landscapes in the 1930s. He meticulously designed the 22-acre gardens, creating more than 100 topiary forms and 15 distinct "garden rooms." The estate, including the 18th-century Manor House that he renovated, was opened to the public in 1971. Ladew's dedication earned him the Garden Club of America's Distinguished Achievement Award for creating "the most outstanding topiary garden in America" without professional assistance. Today, the nonprofit organization continues to maintain and promote his artistic legacy.
