The history of the Main and Military Plazas is integral to the founding and development of San Antonio. Military Plaza, originally known as Plaza de Armas, was established in 1722 as a parade ground and market square for the Spanish soldiers of the Presidio San Antonio de Béxar. A decade later, in 1731, Main Plaza, or Plaza de las Islas Canarias, was founded by Canary Islander settlers, creating the first civilian government in Texas and serving as a central marketplace.
