The Pennyrile State Forest's history traces back to 1930 when the Kentucky Division of Forestry began acquiring land leases as part of a land use and resettlement program. During the 1930s, the National Parks Service and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) played a significant role in developing a 300-acre tract within the forest for recreational purposes. This included the construction of the Pennyrile Lake dam in 1937-1938. By 1954, the property was officially deeded to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park was established within the state forest, offering lodging and more developed recreational facilities. Today, the overarching 14,379-acre State Forest continues to be managed by the Kentucky Division of Forestry for sustainable timber production, water quality protection, and the enhancement of biological diversity, while the 863-acre State Resort Park provides a hub for visitor activities.
