Sea Life Park Hawaii first opened its doors in 1964, initially conceived as a shark research facility. Public interest, however, quickly led to its expansion and evolution, eventually dividing its focus between a research arm, the Oceanic Institute, and a public venue, Sea Life Park. The park gained renown for pioneering marine mammal science and, by 1980, ceased collecting animals from the wild, instead relying on successful breeding programs for its animal population. Over the decades, ownership of the park has changed hands, being acquired by Dolphin Discovery in 2005, and subsequently by Palace Entertainment in 2008. In early 2025, the park was sold to Herschend. Throughout these transitions, Sea Life Park has maintained its commitment to marine conservation, rehabilitation, and education, championing programs for green sea turtles, native seabirds, and Hawaiian monk seals.
