The St. Mary's Catholic Church parish was founded in 1851, initially worshipping in a small wooden frame structure. Within two years, a larger brick church replaced it, with the original building repurposed as the first school. Disagreements over a new location in 1865 delayed further expansion, but eventually, the parish property was relocated, and a stone church was completed in 1874. The current awe-inspiring church building, designed in the Gothic Revival style, began construction in 1902 and was completed in 1904. Reverend Joseph Brinkman, who also contributed to the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, designed several key buildings for the district, including the 1894 Colonial Revival school and the 1899 rectory with Colonial Revival and Italianate influences. A Tudor Revival convent, designed by Carimir Ignatius Krajewski, was added in 1926. The entire complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 12, 2004.
