The Dundee Canal was an industrial canal built in Clifton and Passaic, New Jersey, between 1858 and 1861, running parallel to the Passaic River. Its primary purpose was to supply hydropower and water for manufacturing, particularly for the numerous textile mills that flourished in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Dundee Dam, first constructed around 1833 and later enhanced, played a crucial role in diverting water into the canal and even created Dundee Lake in 1857. The canal, alongside the development of railroads, significantly spurred economic growth and population in Passaic and its surrounding areas. Notable textile operations like the Botany Worsted Mills were attracted to its banks. However, by the 1930s, the canal began to decline due to factors such as pollution and the slowing woolen manufacturing industry. Much of the canal was eventually filled in or culverted, particularly during the construction of New Jersey Route 21 in the 1960s. The Dundee Canal Industrial Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1999, recognizing its profound historical importance.
