Sunset Zoo's story began in 1929 when the city of Manhattan acquired land that was originally intended for Sunset Cemetery. However, portions of the rocky terrain were unsuitable for burials, leading to the establishment of Sunset Park in 1933. Dr. E.J. Frick, a professor at Kansas State University, became a pivotal figure, volunteering for 43 years to acquire, care for, and display animals, essentially shaping the early zoo. Initial construction of exhibits, buildings, and walkways was funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), with much of the original native limestone work still preserved today. By 1980, a community push for modernization led to a new Master Plan and the implementation of a small admission fee, with revenues directly supporting ongoing improvements. Sunset Zoo achieved accreditation by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) in 1989, a testament to its commitment to high standards of animal care and education.
Enjoy observing animals in their naturalistic habitats, attend Keeper Chats, participate in feeding opportunities, and let children enjoy the playground area.
The zoo is open year-round. During colder months, most animals, including many birds, enjoy the snow and cold, always having access to warm dens, though some birds may not be viewable. In summer, animals may be less active during peak heat. The zoo hosts special events throughout the year, such as "Brew at the Zoo," "SPOOKtacular," and "Wine in the Wild."
Sunset Zoo is wheelchair accessible. However, it is a hilly park, and some inclines (particularly near the gibbon exhibit and the entrance to the Asian Trail) can be steep. An ADA-accessible pathway is available at Expedition Asia. Zoo guests can request a ride back up to the entrance in a zoo vehicle by calling Guest Services. Wheelchairs are available for rent, but electric wheelchairs are not provided.
