The pavilion, originally known as "The Living Seas," opened on January 15, 1986, after extensive planning that began even before Epcot's opening in 1982. It was designed to immerse guests in an oceanic exploration base called SeaBase Alpha, and at its completion, housed the largest saltwater tank in the world, holding 5.7 million US gallons of water. The original attraction featured a ride through the tank in "Seacabs" and aimed to educate visitors about marine research. In 2006, following the immense popularity of Disney and Pixar's *Finding Nemo*, the pavilion underwent a significant re-theming and was rededicated as "The Seas with Nemo & Friends" on January 24, 2007.
