About

Nestled in the heart of Louisiana, the Alexandria Zoological Park offers a captivating journey into the animal kingdom, providing an intimate and engaging experience for visitors of all ages. Spread across 33 acres, this accredited zoo is home to approximately 500 animals representing over 160 species from around the globe, making it a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The zoo's thoughtful design immerses guests in diverse habitats, allowing for up-close encounters and memorable discoveries.

A visit to the Alexandria Zoo is an adventure across continents, featuring distinct themed areas that showcase the planet's rich biodiversity. The "Land of the Jaguar" transports you to Latin America, where you can marvel at powerful jaguars, intriguing giant anteaters, and playful spider monkeys amidst Mayan-inspired architecture. Closer to home, the award-winning "Louisiana Habitat" celebrates the state's unique ecosystems, offering naturalistic exhibits for native species such as American alligators, North American river otters, and black bears, complete with exciting underwater viewing windows.

Continue your expedition to the "African Experience," where African lions proudly survey their domain from a habitat featuring impressive rock formations and a 17-foot waterfall. Here, you might also spot dwarf crocodiles, greater flamingos, and the beloved Aldabra tortoise, "Big Al." The "Australian Walkabout" offers a glimpse into the land down under, with wallabies, emus, and the famous laughing kookaburra. Beyond the animal exhibits, the zoo fosters a deep appreciation for conservation, participating in numerous Species Survival Plans (SSP) to protect endangered animals worldwide. The Alexandria Zoological Park boasts a rich history, with its origins potentially dating back to as early as 1922, though it officially opened to the public in 1926 in Bringhurst Park. Initially, the zoo consisted of simple cages and housed mostly discarded pets like rabbits, goats, and deer. A significant turning point occurred in the late 1960s when the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) threatened to close the facility. This prompted the formation of the Friends of the Alexandria Zoo (FOTAZ), a crucial support organization that continues to aid the zoo today. Much of the zoo's modern development and quality are attributed to Robert Leslie Whitt, who served as director for 34 years starting in 1974.
