The Benicia Arsenal was established as an ordnance depot in August 1851, following the first occupation of the site by US Army troops in 1849. Designated the Benicia Arsenal in 1852, it quickly grew in importance, with President Abraham Lincoln ordering its expansion during the Civil War to support Union efforts in the West. Over its 100-year operational history, it served as a critical supply point for every major American conflict, including the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II, notably supplying munitions for the Doolittle Raid. The Arsenal's rich past includes housing the Army's experimental Camel Corps in the 1850s, with the original Camel Barns now serving as the Benicia Historical Museum. Many notable figures, including Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and John J. Pershing, and writer Stephen Vincent Benét, were stationed or passed through the Arsenal. The Arsenal was deactivated in 1963 and officially closed in 1964, and was subsequently listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, recognizing its profound contributions to the nation's military history and the development of California.
Walk through the historic district to admire the architecture, visit the Benicia Historical Museum for in-depth exhibits, and take advantage of the scenic overlooks for photography. Some private buildings occasionally offer tours or host public events.
Benicia experiences mild, Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm and dry, while winters are mild and wet. Animal activity is not a primary focus, but migratory birds may be seen along the Carquinez Strait. Special events, often tied to history or local arts, may occur seasonally.
The open spaces and paths within the historic district are generally accessible for walking and strolling. Some areas are used by dog-walkers and cyclists. Individual historic buildings may have varying levels of accessibility due to their age and preservation status; it is advisable to check with specific venues (like the museum or event spaces) if particular accommodations are needed.
