Carrollton was established as a rural resort community outside of New Orleans in 1833, initially platted on the former McCarty plantation. It was officially incorporated as a town in 1845 and became a city in 1859, serving as the parish seat for Jefferson Parish. The development of the area was significantly spurred by the introduction of the Carrollton Railroad in 1836, which connected it to New Orleans. In 1874, Carrollton was annexed by New Orleans, becoming the city's 16th and 17th Wards, though it has maintained a distinct identity.
