The idea for the Flint RiverQuarium emerged in the aftermath of the devastating 1994 flood, as Albany sought ways to recover and rebuild its downtown. Community leaders envisioned an anchor attraction that would interpret the geological, hydrological, and ecological conditions of the Flint River Basin. Opened in 2004, the 54,000-square-foot facility was designed by architect Antoine Predock, whose vision was deeply inspired by Southwest Georgia's natural environment. The Flint RiverQuarium was established not only as a tourist destination but also with a mission to educate future generations about the crucial need for conservation and stewardship of natural resources, particularly clean water.
