Hood County was created in 1866, and the town of Granbury, named after Confederate General Hiram B. Granbury, was established as its county seat. The district's central feature, the current Hood County Courthouse, is the fifth courthouse to occupy this site. Designed by the prolific Waco architect W.C. Dodson in 1890, the French Second Empire-style limestone structure was completed in 1891 for a cost of $34,500. The courthouse faced a significant challenge in 1968 when a tornado severely damaged its distinctive clock tower. Initially, county officials considered removing the tower, but a grassroots preservation effort, spearheaded by Norma Crawford, successfully advocated for its restoration. This pivotal moment sparked a broader preservation movement in Granbury, leading to the revitalization of the courthouse and much of the surrounding square, which was subsequently listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Extensive restoration efforts, including a comprehensive interior renovation completed in 2012, have ensured the courthouse's grandeur and functionality for future generations, earning it the Texas Downtown Association 2013 President's Award for Best Restoration.
