The origins of Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden date back to 1910 when a parcel of land in Rockford, Illinois, was purchased by the Klehm family, renowned horticulturists. What began as a private tree nursery and test garden for the family's business evolved over decades into the comprehensive arboretum it is today. In 1985, the Klehm family generously donated 120 acres of their property to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, with the vision of creating a public arboretum. This foundational gift, combined with subsequent land acquisitions, established the Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden as a significant botanical institution dedicated to horticultural education, research, and public enjoyment.
