The town of Norwich was chartered in 1761, with its first settlers arriving two years later in 1763, gradually clearing wilderness and constructing early log buildings. The village center as it is known today gained prominence in the early 1800s, especially following the establishment of the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (which later became Norwich University) in 1820. This institution significantly contributed to the village's growth, with its population peaking around 1830.
