About

Nestled on 23 acres along Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon, the Oregon Coast Aquarium offers an extraordinary journey into the diverse and captivating marine life of the Pacific Northwest. Consistently ranked among the top aquariums in North America, this world-class institution is a vibrant living classroom dedicated to connecting visitors with the ocean and inspiring vital conservation efforts. From the moment you step inside, you'll embark on an immersive adventure, tracing the path of a raindrop from the Oregon Coast Range all the way to the vast Pacific Ocean, encountering thousands of fascinating creatures along the way. The visitor experience at the Oregon Coast Aquarium is both educational and engaging, designed to delight all ages.

Marvel at the graceful underwater ballets of playful sea otters, curious harbor seals, and majestic sea lions in their expansive outdoor habitats. Step into the Seabird Aviary, one of the largest in North America, where you can observe a variety of native seabirds like tufted puffins and common murres diving and swimming. Indoors, explore a mesmerizing world of invertebrates in the Sandy Shores and Rocky Shores exhibits, where you can even gently touch sea stars and anemones in interactive tide pools. Perhaps the most iconic experience awaits in "Passages of the Deep," a series of walk-through acrylic tunnels that immerse you in three distinct ocean habitats.

Here, you'll come face-to-face with sharks, bat rays, halibut, and schools of rockfish, feeling as though you're truly walking on the ocean floor. Beyond the aquatic displays, the aquarium continually introduces new wonders, such as the recently added Indo-Pacific Coral Reef exhibit and the interactive Nature Play Area, providing ample opportunities for discovery, wonder, and hands-on fun for the whole family. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is more than just an attraction; it's an invitation to understand, cherish, and protect our precious marine environment. Wondering what that bird or insect is? Find out on your visit using the Snappit nature app.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium's origins trace back to the early 1980s when Newport business leaders envisioned a major attraction to revitalize the local economy. This vision materialized with the aquarium's incorporation as a non-profit educational organization in 1984, followed by significant fundraising efforts. The doors officially opened to the public on May 23, 1992, quickly becoming a landmark event. The aquarium gained international recognition from 1996 to 1998 as the temporary home for Keiko, the orca star of the movie "Free Willy," during his rehabilitation. After Keiko's departure, his former habitat was transformed into the beloved "Passages of the Deep" exhibit, which opened in 2000. Since 2000, the Oregon Coast Aquarium has proudly maintained its accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), a testament to its commitment to the highest standards of animal care, conservation, and education.

What to do here

Engage with the interactive exhibits, watch daily animal feeds and presentations (including the popular Pinniped feed and Seabird Aviary feed), and consider adding a unique animal encounter or behind-the-scenes tour for an additional fee and advance booking. For families, the Nature Play Area provides an excellent space for children to explore.

Seasonal info

The Oregon Coast's weather can be unpredictable, making the aquarium a perfect destination, as many exhibits are indoors or partially covered. During the winter, the smaller crowds allow for unobstructed views of the animals.

Accessibility

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is committed to accessibility, with all main buildings being ADA compliant and offering seating throughout the facility. Accessible parking spaces are available, and wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters can be rented on a first-come, first-served basis. Sensory bags are also available at admissions, and service animals are welcome. Some outdoor pathways may contain gravel, so it's advisable to consult the official map if this is a concern.
