The vision for Turtle Bay Exploration Park began in the 1980s with the ambitious goal of merging Redding's various small local museums into a single, comprehensive cultural institution. This initiative aimed to create a museum that would preserve the region's logging history and broader heritage. In the mid-1990s, this vision began to materialize on a 60-acre riparian property provided by the City of Redding along the Sacramento River. Key milestones included the opening of Paul Bunyan's Forest Camp in 1997, the Visitor Center in 2000, and the Turtle Bay Museum in 2002. The park was further enhanced by the completion of the architecturally striking Sundial Bridge in 2004, which connects the park's north and south campuses, and the opening of the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in 2005, largely completing the park's current layout. The park's development has involved significant investment, growing to nearly $80 million from an initial $10 million pledge by the McConnell Foundation.
