SeaWorld San Diego first opened its doors on March 21, 1964, as the inaugural park in the SeaWorld chain. Founded by four UCLA graduates—George Millay, Milton Shedd, Dave DeMott, and Ken Norris—the original concept was an ambitious underwater restaurant and marine life show. When this proved unfeasible, they pivoted to creating a marine park, which quickly grew from its initial 21 acres with a few dolphins and sea lions to become a major attraction. The park's early success, boosted by the popularity of marine mammals in popular culture, allowed for rapid expansion and the acquisition of iconic animals like Shamu, the orca. Over the decades, SeaWorld San Diego evolved from primarily a marine zoological park into a comprehensive theme park, adding thrill rides and expanding its educational and conservation efforts, including a significant animal rescue and rehabilitation program.
