The Apponaug Historic District sits within Apponaug Village, an area with a history stretching back millennia, originally inhabited by the Narragansett people who named it "Apponaug," meaning "place of oysters." European settlement began in 1696 when freemen of Warwick were granted water rights for a fulling mill. The village quickly grew into an important crossroads, seaport, and mill town, notably serving as a supply post during the American Revolutionary War. In 1834-35, Apponaug became the municipal center of Warwick, a role it retains with Warwick City Hall located nearby.
