The Packard Proving Grounds were established in Shelby Charter Township, Michigan, in 1927 by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit. This dedicated testing facility was the vision of Packard's general manager, Henry Bourne Joy, who sought a secure location to rigorously test new vehicle developments away from public roads and competitors' eyes. Celebrated Detroit architect Albert Kahn was commissioned to design the primary buildings, with the facility officially opening in 1928. The original complex boasted a 2.5-mile high-speed concrete oval track, various test roads, an airplane hangar (reflecting Packard's involvement in aircraft engines), a Repair Garage with experimental laboratories, and a stately Tudor Revival Gate Lodge. During World War II, the Proving Grounds played a crucial role in the national defense effort when the Chrysler Corporation leased the entire facility to test tanks and other armored vehicles, constructing a new Tank Test Center on site. Packard continued operations until 1956, after which the property passed through the hands of Curtiss-Wright and then the Ford Motor Company. Recognizing its profound historical significance, the Packard Motor Car Foundation acquired the core 14-acre site in 2002, embarking on a mission to restore and preserve it. The Packard Proving Grounds was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and is now part of the MotorCities National Heritage Area.
