SeaWorld San Antonio, originally known as Sea World of Texas, first opened its gates on May 27, 1988. Developed by Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich for $170 million, it was billed at the time as "the largest educational, marine-life theme park in the world." The park quickly became a major attraction, drawing 3.3 million visitors in its first 12 months of operation. Over the years, the park has undergone ownership changes, being sold to Anheuser-Busch, Inc. in 1989, and later to the Blackstone Group, before its current operation by United Parks & Resorts. SeaWorld San Antonio has been a site for successful cetacean breeding programs, particularly for beluga whales, and has continuously evolved, adding new attractions and experiences. In 2016, SeaWorld announced that the current generation of orcas would be the last, and theatrical orca shows would be phased out in favor of more naturalistic Orca Encounters, which debuted at the San Antonio park in February 2020. Recent developments include the opening of Barracuda Strike, Texas' First Inverted Family Coaster, in March 2026, and the retheming of the Sesame Street Bay of Play area to SeaWorld Rescue Jr., featuring new and rethemed rides in March 2025.
