The foundations of St. Joseph's on the Brandywine were laid more than two centuries ago, officially established in 1841 to serve the Irish and Italian Catholic workers of the nearby DuPont powder mills. The DuPont family played a pivotal role in its founding, with Charles I. du Pont donating the land and masons from the DuPont company constructing the church's remarkably thick stone walls. The church was dedicated in December 1842 by Francis Kenrick, Bishop of Philadelphia, becoming one of Delaware's oldest continuously operating Catholic parishes. Throughout its history, the church underwent numerous expansions and renovations, including significant additions in 1848, 1878, 1941, and 1950, which gradually altered its appearance from the original 1841 structure. In 1976, St. Joseph's on the Brandywine was recognized for its historical importance by being added to the National Register of Historic Places. More recently, in 2023, extensive renovations restored key elements of the sanctuary, such as repositioning the tabernacle to its original central location and installing new pews, while preserving the church's rich heritage. The church is also notable as the home parish of the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden.
