The Bryn Athyn Historic District originated in the late 19th century when John Pitcairn Jr., a wealthy Scottish-born businessman and follower of the Swedenborgian faith (the New Church), sought to establish a major educational and religious center. In the late 1880s, Pitcairn purchased 500 acres in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, to realize this vision. He commissioned the renowned New York City firm Carrère and Hastings to design his personal estate, Cairnwood, completed in 1895 in the Beaux-Arts style. The grounds were planned by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Eliot. Following a schism in The New Church, the General Church of the New Jerusalem was founded, headquartered in Bryn Athyn. John Pitcairn's son, Raymond Pitcairn, played a pivotal role in the construction of the Bryn Athyn Cathedral between 1913 and 1928, working with architect Ralph Adams Cram. Raymond also oversaw the creation of his own residence, Glencairn, built between 1928 and 1939, designed in a Romanesque style to house his growing collection of religious art. The district was designated a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008, recognizing its significant collection of Arts and Crafts movement architecture.
