Chalco Hills Recreation Area was established as a result of efforts by the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District to provide flood control and enhance recreational opportunities. The area officially opened in 1988. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed the dam that created Wehrspann Lake, and the Natural Resources District currently manages the recreation area. Dom's Park, a playground within the recreation area, was built in 2021 in honor of Dominik Walters, a child who loved visiting the park.
