Originally known as Gowdy Island, the land that is now Huddy Park began its transformation in the late 1800s when marshland was reclaimed. In 1905, after a failed development project, the property was sold to the township and became Toms River's first public park. It was later renamed to honor Captain Joshua Huddy, a local Revolutionary War hero. Huddy's story is central to the park's identity. On March 24, 1782, Huddy bravely defended Toms River from a British and Loyalist attack on the blockhouse located here, but was captured and tragically executed. This act became a significant moment in the war, even delaying peace negotiations. The park underwent a 250th-anniversary renovation in 2017, introducing colonial-style pathways and interpretive signage to deepen visitors' connection to this profound history.
