The Kabetogama Ranger Station District was constructed between 1933 and 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression. Initially, it served as an administrative hub for the Kabetogama State Forest, managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The district is a prime example of "Federal Relief Construction in Minnesota, 1933–1941" and is recognized for its local significance in architecture, conservation, landscape architecture, and social history. In 1987, the Minnesota government donated the property to the National Park Service following the establishment of Voyageurs National Park in the 1970s. The National Park Service continues to utilize the property as one of the main administrative and visitor entrances to Voyageurs. The district was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1993, acknowledging its role in representing the CCC's lasting legacy and distinctive rustic architecture.
