The North Loop, also famously known as the Warehouse District, was once the commercial heart of Minneapolis. From the late 1800s through the 1930s, it flourished as a major hub for manufacturing and distribution, playing a crucial role in connecting the Midwest and the wider U.S. with goods transported via its extensive rail system. Iconic American products like the Milky Way candy bar and Creamette pasta had their origins here, and factories in the district produced everything from Model T Fords to agricultural implements. The predominant architectural styles, including Chicago Commercial, Italianate, and Richardsonian Romanesque, speak to this rich industrial past. Following decades of decline from the 1930s to the 1990s, many of the warehouses stood vacant. The neighborhood began its significant revitalization in the early 1980s when the Minneapolis art and theater scene moved into the affordable commercial spaces. This artistic resurgence paved the way for developers to recognize the rehab potential, leading to a wave of conversions turning old warehouses into lofts, apartments, offices, and a burgeoning scene of restaurants and shops. The construction of Target Field in 2010 further cemented the North Loop's status as a dynamic and thriving urban center, contributing to its rapid growth and earning it a spot on national "best neighborhoods" lists.
