The story of Franklin Park Conservatory dates back to 1851 when the Columbus Horticultural Society established a public garden. In 1886, the grounds officially became Franklin Park. Inspired by the City Beautiful movement and the Chicago World's Fair, the iconic John F. Wolfe Palm House, a grand Victorian-style glass greenhouse, opened to the public in 1897 as Franklin Park Conservatory. The Conservatory expanded significantly in 1989, adding 58,000 square feet, including new plant collections, classrooms, a gift shop, and a café. In 1992, it hosted AmeriFlora '92, an international horticulture exposition, bringing it to national prominence. A major milestone in its artistic offerings occurred in 2003 when it became the second botanical garden worldwide to host a Dale Chihuly exhibition, with a significant portion of the artwork later purchased to become a permanent collection. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children's Garden, a two-acre imaginative outdoor space, opened in 2018, further enhancing its family-friendly appeal.
