The Bellport Village Historic District offers a timeless escape on Long Island's South Shore. This designated National Historic District captivates visitors with its remarkably preserved 19th-century architecture, tranquil tree-lined streets, and a distinctive New England-like ambiance that sets it apart from more bustling locales. It's a place where history whispers from every clapboard and shingle, inviting a slower pace and appreciation for a bygone era.
Strolling through the district reveals a collection of architectural treasures, including graceful Victorian and stately Greek Revival homes. Key highlights include the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society complex, which features the circa 1831 Post-Crowell House, the 1904 Barn Museum housing local collections, the charming 1850 Gazebo, and a historic Blacksmith Shop. Visitors can also admire the iconic Bellport Academy, the stately Bellport Village Hall (originally the Bellport Memorial Library), and the robust Old Bellport Firehouse, all contributing to the district's rich visual narrative.
Visiting Bellport Village is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a serene, authentic small-town experience, far from the crowds. The village's main thoroughfares, such as Bellport Lane and South Country Road, are dotted with inviting boutiques, art galleries, and local eateries that complement the historic setting. The land now known as Bellport was originally purchased from the Unkechaug Indians in 1664 and was then called Occumbomock Neck. Jonathan Rose was the first permanent settler in the 1680s, with his family owning much of the neck by 1720. In 1829, Captain Thomas Bell, a Scottish immigrant, acquired land and envisioned the area as a bustling seaport, subsequently renaming it Bell-Port. He proceeded to build a dock and a road leading to it. However, the natural inlet that provided access to the open ocean eventually closed, shifting Bellport's development from a seaport to a popular tourist destination for wealthy visitors from New York City. The village was officially incorporated in 1910. Its historical significance was formally recognized on July 4, 1980, when the Bellport Village Historic District, encompassing a significant portion of its historic architecture, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, alongside the separately listed Bellport Academy. The Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society actively works to preserve and interpret the area's rich past.
