The Convent and Academy of the Visitation was founded in Mobile, Alabama, in 1832 by Bishop Michael Portier, the first Bishop of Mobile. His vision was to establish a convent for the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary to provide education for girls in his diocese, addressing a significant lack of schools at the time. Five Visitation Sisters arrived from Georgetown in 1832 to establish the institution, which quickly began educating students. Tragedy struck in May 1854 when a fire destroyed the original buildings. However, rebuilding commenced swiftly, resulting in the current French Renaissance Revival quadrangle completed in 1855. The academy thrived, even through the Civil War, expanding to include high school and grammar school facilities. The ornate Sacred Heart Chapel was dedicated in 1895. Due to declining enrollment and increased operational demands, the high school closed in 1948 and the grammar school in 1952. The complex then transitioned into a retreat house in the 1950s, becoming the Visitation Monastery it is today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 24, 1992.
