Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was established in 1936 by Robert H. Montgomery, a passionate plant-collector and businessman. Montgomery envisioned a world-class botanical garden in Miami, the only place in the continental U.S. where many tropical plants could thrive outdoors year-round. He named the garden in honor of his dear friend, Dr. David Fairchild, a renowned plant explorer who had retired to Miami in 1935 after bringing over 75,000 plant species to the United States from his global expeditions. The garden officially opened to the public in 1938, designed by the esteemed landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, who emphasized variety, consistency, contrast, and openness in his work. From its inception, Fairchild has been dedicated to collecting, documenting, and studying tropical and subtropical plants, with a particular focus on palms and cycads. In a testament to its horticultural significance, Fairchild also became the home of the American Orchid Society in 2012.
