The land comprising Harry P. Leu Gardens has a rich history, with its earliest recorded ownership by the Mizell family in 1858. The pivotal moment came in 1936 when Harry P. Leu, a successful Orlando businessman, and his wife, Mary Jane, purchased the property and its 1888 farmhouse, now known as the Leu House Museum. Driven by their passion for horticulture, the Leus traveled extensively, collecting a vast array of exotic and native plants that they carefully cultivated to transform their estate into a breathtaking garden showplace. In 1961, with a vision to share their botanical masterpiece with the public and for horticultural education, Harry and Mary Jane Leu generously donated their 50-acre property, including their historic home and gardens, to the City of Orlando.
