The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory's history dates back to an earlier conservatory built in 1898, which was eventually demolished in 1955. Construction of the current, distinctive "Domes" began in 1959, with the conservatory officially opening in 1964. Designed by local architect Donald L. Grieb, the three unique conoidal structures, inspired by beehives, were an innovative solution for housing tall plants and were an engineering feat of their time. The Floral Show Dome opened in 1964, followed by the Tropical Dome in 1966, and the Desert Dome in 1967. First Lady Lady Bird Johnson even dedicated the site in 1965, calling them "Milwaukee's exciting new astrodomes for nature." Throughout its history, the Domes have undergone significant restoration projects, notably in 2008 and 2016, to maintain their structural integrity and ensure their continued operation as a beloved public attraction.

Accessibility

Paved pathways are available in all domes, though some grades can be challenging for manual wheelchairs.
