North Park was established in 1927, becoming the largest park within Allegheny County's network of green spaces. A significant period of development occurred during the 1930s, with funding from federal initiatives like the Civil Works Administration and the Public Works Administration. The iconic North Park Boathouse, a prominent stone-faced structure designed to support recreational boating and offer scenic lake access, was completed in 1934. The park's historic swimming pool, once acclaimed as the world's largest, opened its doors in 1937. The Latodami Nature Center, encompassing 420 acres of varied habitats, became part of North Park in 1969 when the Horning family sold their "Latodami Farm" to Allegheny County. More recently, a $21 million restoration project between 2009 and 2012, funded by Allegheny County, the Army Corps, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, removed accumulated sediment from North Park Lake, significantly restoring its depth and ecosystem.
