Spy Pond is a natural kettle hole pond, a geological marvel formed approximately 15,000 years ago when a colossal block of ice broke away from a receding glacier, leaving behind a depression that filled with water. During the 19th century, Spy Pond played a significant role in the local economy, becoming a major source of ice that was cut and shipped as far as India. After the advent of refrigeration, its industrial use declined, but the pond transitioned into a popular recreational hub. The area known as Spy Pond Field, also referred to as Hornblower Field, has long been a center for community sports. Its facilities, including tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and a multi-purpose field, have served Arlington High School and youth sports teams for years.
